Car won't start? What to do next
Safe first steps when your car will not start, the simple checks, and how to get a jump-start from Shynit.
Updated October 20, 2026. Prices are live from Shynit.
First, get safe
- If you are on a road, turn on your hazard lights.
- If you can, move the car off the road, away from moving traffic. If you cannot, stay well away from passing cars while you wait.
- If anyone is hurt or in danger, call 911 first.
The simple checks
- Is it in Park (or Neutral in a manual), with your foot on the brake? Many cars will not start otherwise.
- Do the dashboard lights come on? Dim lights or none at all, or a fast clicking when you try to start, usually mean a flat battery. A jump-start is the fix.
- Bright lights but the engine will not turn over? That can be the starter or another fault, and a jump-start may not help. Your owner's manual or a mechanic is the next step.
- Keyless car? If the key fob's battery is low, the car may not see the key. Your owner's manual shows how to start the car with a weak fob.
Getting a jump-start from Shynit
A Shyner comes to you with the equipment and gets the engine turning over again.
- Open the Shynit app and choose what you need.
- Share where you are. You see the price before you confirm.
- The nearest available Shyner accepts and comes to you. You can track them on the live map.
- Standard jump-start: $49.00. Back on the road, usually inside the hour.
- After-hours / emergency: $69.00. A jump-start outside normal hours.
After the jump-start
Drive for a while, rather than switching straight off, so the battery can recharge. If the car needs another jump soon after, have the battery and charging system checked.
